Today when Sissy got back from Dallas with Maddie, we finished planting the garden.
The cats and chickens wanted to help us. In this picture, the cat is playing with the string we were using to make a straight line to plant our corn.
We planted two rows of corn, one row of purple hull peas, one row of cream peas, and short rows of okra, squash, radishes, and green beans. We had already planted our tomatoes, strawberries, peppers, onions and potatoes. The potatoes are doing great. Peppers and tomatoes are doing ok, but Sissy doesn't like where we planted them this year. Onions are not doing as good this year as last year. Strawberries didn't do good last year, and aren't doing good this year.
Last year we tried a new technique using raised beds. You are supposed to be able to get more vegetables per square foot and reduce the need to weed as much. We had a good garden last year, not everything worked perfectly. Last year we did it my way. This year we are doing it Sissy's way using the old tried and true rows, instead of raised beds. Due to the sandy soil we didn't mound up our rows, we left them flush with the rest of the garden. This is new to me. Sissy thinks it will hold water better than mounds. When you put water on the dry sand in mounds it just beads up and rolls off. We are hoping this way it will soak in better.
