Did I Tell You About the Place Called Doo-wah-diddy?

This weekend we were at Aunt Jane's lake house for a sort of South family reunion. The cousins love to get together. Their favorite thing is tubing and Uncle John is a real sport in accommodating their insatiable desire to be on the water. Aunt Jane has named her lake house "South Shore" in honor of her dad, my grandfather.

My sister and her family were there. She is a third grade teacher in Mt. Pleasant. She is a spelling champion and no fun to play Banana-grams with unless she's on your team. She told a story from a few years ago that I can't quit thinking about. I told it to my SS class today and they got a kick out of it. I hope she submits it to Readers Digest. I thought I would memorialize it here. This is a true story. 

A few years back her school had an assembly for Veterans Day. Before the program she told all the boys in her class to tuck their shirt in as a show of respect to the elderly men who would be attending. She explained that to many of that generation things like removing caps and tucking your shirt in are a big deal. Little Jose' asked her again "what is it you want me to do?" She said to tuck their shirt into their pants. He looked at her funny and asked again. By this time she was getting mad and told him if he wasn't comfortable doing it in front of everyone he could go into the restroom. A few minutes later Jose' came out not wearing a shirt; it was "tucked" in his pants.  It took her a minute to figure out why this usually respectful boy was not wearing his shirt, at which point she felt sorry for him and the lack of communication. 

Below is a rare family picture of the South's in 1935. My Grandfather Wayne is the one standing to the far left. My Great Grandfather Luther is seated in the overalls. I would imagine the photo was taken in Delta County. Maybe someone can fill in the names of the others.

This week's much anticipated get together sadly marks the end of summer for G-man. Two-a-Days starts tomorrow. Gladly the cool breezes of Fall are just around the corner.
